Boardman grads on Miami University Dean’s List
Miami University students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average for second semester 2011-2012 have been named to the dean’s list recognizing academic performance. Included on this prestigious list of students were Andrew Charles Stanislav, Jon Robert Wallace, Stephanie Francis Mayo, all of Boardman.
Jankowski selected as pageant finalist
Boardman’s Paige Jankowski was selected to compete in the National American Miss pageant July 28-29. Jankowski’s other activities include cheerleading, Girl Scouts, choir, gymnastics, her church’s kid’s club, and flag football.
Kingdom Community Church holding Bible boot camp
Kingdom Community Church is presenting a special free Vacation Bible School at Mauthe Park, 156 Smithfield Street, Struthers from July 30 to Aug. 3. In an effort to help children of working parents to attend, the program will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. In addition, a light dinner will be served to the children at 5:30 p.m. The Bible boot camp is open to ages 4-11 and preregistration is encouraged. Bonding with babies and books
The Boardman library will host an event at 10 a.m. on Aug. 2 for babies 6-23 months old that includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tell me a story is family event
The Boardman library will be having a family story time frm 10-10:30 a.m. Aug. 8 and 16. There will be stories and fun for children or all ages. Parents are invited to join their children.
Parent and child workshop at the Boardman library
The public library will hold a session at 10 a.m. on Aug. 1 to help children develop early literacy skills that will make it easier for them to learn to read when they start school. This workshop is for parents, caregivers, and teachers of children ages 0-5 to help learn about the five early literacy practices — talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. The approximately 50-minute workshop is for adults, but there will be activities to help occupy the children attending.
Be a shining star at library
The Boardman library is seeking individuals and group acts for their “Be A Shining Star” talent show for children of all ages. Bring friends and family to enjoy a frozen treat and applaud our talented performers. You can sign up now. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Chalk it up to reading
The Boardman library will have an event for chalk stories and drawing activities outside at 10 a.m. on Aug. 29. This event is fun for the whole family. If it rains, the program will be held in the meeting room.
Parachute activities in the Boardman library
The public library will be having a day filled with parachute stories and games on Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. Parents are invited to join their children for the 30-minute story time.
Pac-Man for tweens
Play a live version of the “Pac-Man” game and win a prize if you have the highest score at the Boardman library on Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. Wear comfy shoes so that you may be able to capture or chase classmates in grades 4-6.
Teen Advisory Board meeting at the Boardman library
Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting. The club will meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 6:30 p.m. The first meeting is on Aug. 1. Newcomers are always welcome. This is for teens in grades 7-12.
Get your blood checked at the Boardman library
A blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is to be held at the library on Aug. 6 from 12:30-3 p.m.
Create a business plan at the Boardman library
Learn about writing and revising a business plan for your new or established business with a member of SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, on Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. A librarian from the Information Services Department’s Business and Investment Center will introduce print and electronic sources that can provide information for developing your business plan.
Social media marketing meeting set
Tyler Clark from the Youngstown Business Incubator is the presenter for this program to be held at the Boardman library on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. The term “social media” comprises a number of tools, including blogs, Twitter feeds and Facebook pages. Learn what combination of these tools is appropriate to help you reach your business goals and what comprises the audience for each of the social media tools, including how to convert readers and viewers to repeat customers.
Jigsaw puzzle swap
Do you have a jigsaw puzzle you’ve already conquered and want to trade off for a puzzle from another enthusiast? The Boardman library will host a jigsaw puzzle swap sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC on Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. Puzzle enthusiasts that need information can contact the development office at 330-740-6086
Fundraiser to be held in support of local cancer patient
A fundraiser will be held at Westminister Presbyterian Church on July 29 from noon-2 p.m. This event is to help a member of the congregation, Jan Bates, defray the costs of battling cancer.
The cost is $8 for one dinner or $15 for two. The cost includes cabbage rolls, haluski, dinner rolls, and dessert. You can eat at the church or order takeout at 330-758-6055. There will also be a basket raffle and a bake sale. The Westminister Presbyterian Church is located at 119 Stadium Dr, Boardman.
Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day
Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Sulmona Valley Auxiliary to have picnic

Pirate invasion July 28-29
Pirates have come to Avaloch Village July 28-29 at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire. There will be special contests, entertainment, and for this weekend only, special guests, The Lake Erie Pirates. Meet real pirates and see displays of real pirate weaponry. The Great Lakes Medieval Faire is located seven miles south of I-90 on state Route 534 and open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. Austintown native and author to host book signing
Lori Whited Neidlinger, author of “I Banish You, Pink,” will be holding a book signing at Rita’s in Austintown on July 21 and White House Fruit Farm in Canfield on July 22.
“I Banish You, Pink” is a children’s book for ages 6-9 and is written to engage and encourage young readers, showing a positive way of dealing with some pressures and trends. Have your copy signed with a personal message from the author.
Helping Kids Grow Diaper Drive
The Boardman office of Making Kids Count, 7178 West Blvd., Suite E, will be hosting a Diaper Drive July 28 from 8 a.m. to noon to try to help families in need of assistance. Monday night writers group
Join area writers for a mix of writing exercises and feedback at Monday Night Writers. Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions will explore both the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with ‘works-in-progress’ will also have a chance to get comments and critiques on their work. The next meeting is July 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road, Canfield. There is a $10 fee per class and registration is preferred. Charity car show coming to the Mahoning Valley
The Mahoning Valley Corvettes and Greenwood Chevrolet will be sponsoring its 18th annual car show tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Greenwood Chevrolet, 4665 Mahoning Avenue, Austintown. Registration is from 9-11 a.m. and the show is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The show is open to Corvettes, antiques, classics, customs, and hot rods. There is an entry fee of $10 and if you are showing for National Council of Corvette Clubs points, the fee is $20. Proceeds will benefit local charities and plaques will be awarded for all classes and types of cars, including Peoples Choice Award. The first 125 will receive a 50th anniversary 3x4 dash plaque. Summer skating lessons offered at the Ice Zone
All Saturdays through Aug. 11, The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class.
The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.
Local doctor offers free health lectures
Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on whole foods for a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle on August 9. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. The lecture is free and open to the public. Students grades 4-6 are invited to the Boardman library on July 31 at 2 p.m. to experience trivia, games and fun based on the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series.

The Boardman Library will host stories and fun at the library from 10-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Parents are invited to join and children of all ages are encouraged to attend.
Launch into rockets
Children of all ages can learn some NASA history and make a paper rocket to launch. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. Only at the Boardman library on Thursday at 2 p.m.

East High School Class of 1964 reunion set
The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18 from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th. Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream
The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.
During July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
Find hidden treasures
The Boardman library invites children of all ages to search for hidden treasure buried in the sand. Find the treasure and receive a hand stamp or a stick. During library hours through summer.
