Cal Ripken state championship

Mill Creek Baseball’s 12-year-old All Star team won the Cal Ripken State Championship in Lancaster. Mill Creek advances to the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament from July 26-30 in Elizabethtown, Ky. Other teams competing are from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Mill Creek started strong beating the West Regional Champion Springfield, 13–0. Coleman Stauffer and Jared Fabry combined on a no-hitter while Fabry hit two homers and Randy Smith had three hits. Mill Creek beat the West Regional runner-up Lindenwald, 7-4. Mill Creek got strong pitching performances from their starter Cole Constance and closer Antonio Page. Brennan Olesh hit two home runs. In the championship game, Mill Creek defeated Springfield, 7-4. Drew Havrilla and Randy Smith led the way on the mound while John Johnson hit two homers and Page homered. Other members of the team are Tristan Ballard, Josh Scheetz, Evan Collins and JC Scott. In the West Regional in Warren, Mill Creek defeated Fairfield (18-5) and Trumbull County (7-3 and 8-7).

Girard 11-12 All-Star Tournament

The Hubbard Community Youth League team captured the 2012 Lucarell Tournament hosted by the Girard Baseball Association at Tod Park. Hubbard earned the title with wins over Salem, Girard and Howland. It marked the second straight Lucarell Championship for the Hubbard entry. Team members included Jamie Thomson, Steve Moser, Dom Hover, Cam Chaney, Lucas Mosora, Nick Ferrara, Zach Resatar, Hunter Meyer, Alec Burzynski, Anthony Laird, Timmy Herberger and Ryan Love. The team was managed by Rick Love and coached by Tim Herberger, Lonnie Laird and Dan Chiaberta.

9-U travel

The Mahoning Valley Little Scrappers won the Stars & Stripes tournament in Twinsburg. Players are Anthony Caruso, Nicholas DeMonica, Jacob Gehring, Brendon Kilpatrick, Anthony Massucci, Conner Meyer, Dominic Parise, Jordan Sheehan, Elijah Taylor and Austin Vogt. Coaches are Kyle Kilpatrick, Anthony Caruso and Michael DeMonica.

SOFTBALL

Little League 11-12

Canfield defeated Avon, 11-1, to win the state championship. Canfield advances to the Little League Regional in Indianapolis and will open on Saturday against North/South Dakota. After losing its tournament opener against Avon, 3-0, Canfield defeated Clyde, Conneaut, Wheelersburg and Avon twice by a combined score of 53-4. Canfield’s pitching staff led by Maddy Johns, Bridget Durkin, Jenna Gibson and Jill Baker was dominant, allowing only seven runs in the tournament. Canfield’s offense was impressive as well, collecting 59 hits. Leading hitters were Mia Kindinis, Gibson, Emerson Fletcher, and McKenna Carey. Canfield’s defense committed just two errors for the tournament. The other team members are Ally Lambert, Sidney Lambert, Sydney Fabry, Alana Marzich and Ally Sammarco. Coaches are Kerry Durkin, Kirk Baker and Tony Sammarco.

304 League Ages 7-8

Liberty Sandel’s Loan defeated Girard, 20-6, in the championship game. The 304 League consists of teams from Liberty, Hubbard, Girard, Niles and McDonald. Players are Grace Durkin, Krysten Fine, Gianna DelGarbino, Allyson Jones, Trinity Lamb, Emily Fitzgerald, Gabriella Locastro, Jessalyn Hartsfield, Marissa Wilson, Olivia Coman, Hailey Graham and Esther Parks. Head coach Brett Fine’s assistants are J.T. DelGarbino, Jim Jones and Mike Fitzgerald.
