"Utoya Island" will premiere this weekend in Cleveland

“Utoya Island,” the locally made film that depicted the 2011 massacre of 69 people by an extremist in Norway, will premiere Sunday.

A red-carpet event is planned for the screening, which will take place at noon at the Cedar Lee Theater in Cleveland Heights.

It is not open to the public; only cast, crew, media and other invited guests will be on hand. Most of the actors were from the Youngstown area.

“Utoya Island” was directed by Vitaliy Versace of Cleveland and California. It was shot last year mainly in Mill Creek Park in Youngstown.

When word of the very low-budget production reached Norway, it set off a firestorm of criticism from officials there, who thought it was too soon to make a film about the tragedy. Versace said his goal was to shed light on a problem.

Another premiere will be in Los Angeles, said Versace. There is no public screening planned in Youngstown.

Dylan album on the way after youngstown show

Bob Dylan will release a new studio album two weeks after he comes to Youngstown.

Columbia Records announced that “Tempest” will be released Sept. 11. Dylan will appear in concert at Covelli Centre on Aug. 28.

The album was produced by Dylan himself under the pseudonym Jack Frost and will have 10 original songs.

Hard-rock festival planned at B&O Station

The beautiful B&O Station complex will be the site of Summer Throwdown, an outdoor music festival for metal heads on Aug. 5.

There will be 25 bands on two stages, including Kitchen Knife Conspiracy, Metalourd, Mettal Maffia, The New Pharmacy and They Promised Escape. The all-day festival is being staged by Jason Tibolla’s 3rd Arm Promotions.

Foxy Shazam concert coming to the Cellar

Jason Tibolla took advantage of a sudden tour opening to secure a last-minute concert by Foxy Shazam. The theatrical rock band with a serious Queen-Freddy Mercury complex will perform at The Cellar in Struthers on July 31. Tickets are $12; go to thecellarrocks.com.

‘Sullivan and Son’ series is set in the Steel City

“Sullivan and Son” is kind of like the “Hot in Cleveland” of Pittsburgh. The sitcom, executive-produced by Vince Vaughn, premieres at 10 tonight on TBS.

“Sullivan and Son” stars comedian Steve Byrne as the son who takes over the corner bar that his father ran for decades in a working-class neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Like “Cheers,” it’s a one-set show with a cast of colorful regulars propped up by bar stools. But it’s no “Cheers.”

Like “Hot in Cleveland,” there is no actual footage of the city outside the doors. It’s all shot on a sound stage. But in the premiere, there were quite a few Pittsburgh references and even a Mario Lemieux hockey jersey hanging behind the bar.

Like the main characters in “Hot in Cleveland,” Byrne plays a corporate lawyer who comes to town for a visit and never leaves. The cast also includes Dan Lauria, Christine Ebersole and Brian Doyle-Murray.

Museum exhibit marks city’s role in Batman saga

Pittsburgh was the primary shooting location for “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises,” which opens tomorrow. To celebrate, ToonSeum — the downtown Pittsburgh museum devoted to comic books and cartoons — will open a special exhibit.

The “Pittsburgh as Gotham” exhibit will feature original art from a variety of Batman comics by regional artists, props from “Dark Knight Rises” and photos featuring Pittsburgh as Gotham City, Batman’s fictional hometown.

The exhibit opens Saturday and will be on display through Oct. 7. Go to toonseum.org for information.
