Legacy Awards seeking nominations

Nominations are being accepted for the 2012 Valley Legacy Awards which recognize outstanding seniors and advocates for seniors from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. The awards honor people 60 or older for a lifetime of working to improve the Mahoning Valley and persons who have provided exceptional support to and for older Americans through their professional, volunteer or civic roles.

Recipients are nominated in one of two categories by members of the community: Outstanding Senior and Outstanding Senior Advocate.

Eastwood car show

The Arby’s Cruisin’ Crew from Salem and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers have teamed up to help feed hungry people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

On Sunday, there will be a pre-game car show at Eastwood Field from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley will receive $4 for each car entered in the show.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at Eastwood Field. No pre-registration is required. The first 200 cars will receive a dashboard plaque. Seventeen trophies will be awarded, and the top 10 cars will parade around the warm-up track prior to the game. Awards will be given at 3:30 p.m. Cars will be in a secured area for those wishing to stay for the game.

Rock-a-thon to benefit epilepsy awareness

AUSTINTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Epilepsy Annual “Rocking for Epilepsy Awareness and Support” is Saturday on the front porch of the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Austintown at state Route 46 and Interstate 80.

Hundreds of people will rock during the hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise epilepsy awareness and support for service offered by Mahoning Valley Epilepsy (MVE). Community businesses, families, friends, clubs, and organizations sponsor rocking chairs or get pledges to occupy the rocking chairs for an hour at a time during the event.

There will be live entertainment, raffles and refreshments throughout the day. Information will be provided on first aid for seizures, signs and symptoms of epilepsy, and statistics on the prevalence and seriousness of the disorder. Persons will epilepsy will be on hand to talk about what life is like living with Epilepsy.

This summer, MVE sent five local children to Camp Frog, a regular camp except it is staffed by neurological professionals and seizure trained counselors. It also helps adults obtain medications, and sponsors support groups and educational programs at schools, work sites and other venues throughout the Tri-County area.

Grief camps offered for youth in Silver Park

The Alliance Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice is offering grief camps for children and young adults in August at Silver Park Cabin, 2930 South Union Ave.

A session for children 5-11 is Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a session for young adults 12-17 is Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The camps explore how music, memory keepers and sharing feelings can help people work through the grief process. The children’s session will include play opportunities and crafts to help overcome grief, and children will learn ways to express their feelings and act out their emotions. The young-adult session will teach campers how to create a journal and crafts to overcome grief, as well as different ways to express feeling and ways to have open discussions about their grief.

Free event helps to deal with arthritis pain

The Arthritis Foundation’s 2012 Trumbull County Expo is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 7 at McMenamy’s Banquet Center, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road. The registration deadline is July 31. Call 800-245-2275 ext. 6433. The event provides a forum where patients, their family members and caregivers can learn more about the different forms of arthritis and how to manage the physical and emotional pain typically associated with the disease.

The free expo also features speakers who are experts in the field of arthritis, including rheumatologist Dr. Arminda Lumapas, who will provide updates in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and fibromyalgia.
