Workers plan NYC protest march next week

NEW YORK (AP) — Low-wage workers plan to march next week in Manhattan to ask for higher salaries, better working conditions and a raise of the state’s minimum wage.

Latino elected officials said on Tuesday that airport workers, car washers, supermarket workers and janitors will participate.

The march next Tuesday is part of a National Day of Action. Events also are planned in Miami, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston.

Supporters include Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, state Sen. Adriano Espaillat and community groups like Make the Road New York.

They say employers often don’t pay fair wages, keep workers’ tips and avoid paying sick leave.

The march is being organized by a coalition of about 60 groups led by United New York.
