Event will provide blast from the past
Heather Merritt of Warren, who rehabilitates birds of prey and waterfowl, shows off one of the raptors that is part of her program. Her birds will be part of the fascinating “Birds in Flight” program set for Heritage Day in Niles, from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 5.
NILES
Niles Historical Society will sponsor Heritage Day from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St.
The celebration will include tours of the 14-room Victorian-style mansion, the barn and the flower gardens all day.
A large tent near the barn will feature Civil War items on display. In the barn, a special private collection of Civil War artifacts may be viewed along with a large Southwest Indian display. That comprises large paintings, beadwork, dishes and other Indian artifacts.
Rick Muccio, a caricature artist, will render his impressions of visitors, and June Karovic will return to demonstrate quilting. Barbara James will display her antique buttons, along with newly acquired treasures.
To mark the 150 years since the Ward-Thomas Museum was built by James Ward, Mayor Ralph Infante will cut a birthday cake at 2 p.m.
Heather Merritt’s “Birds in Flight” program is of special interest this year. She rehabilitates raptors and waterfowl and has been educating groups all over Northeast Ohio.
Merritt, of Warren, has been interested in caring for animals since age 3, and she finds herself continually being called upon to help injured wildlife. The birds provide a fascinating show, which will begin at 2:15 p.m.
Throughout the day, live music from Little Joe and the Girard Community Swing Band will entertain visitors. The usual food stands, lemon shakes and a bake sale will be available.
Also for sale will be all the Historical Society’s publications, and Streak Free Cloths for $5 each.
