Off-duty officer fatally struck

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Investigators say an off-duty Philadelphia police officer fatally run struck while riding his bicycle may have been targeted by a motorist following an argument.

Police say the officer was struck late Sunday night in the city’s East Mount Airy neighborhood. The officer was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Authorities say the driver left the scene but the car stopped nearby. Investigators tell WCAU-TV they believe the driver knew the officer and intentionally targeted him after some kind of dispute.

The driver is in custody but no charges have been filed.
