Scrappers avoid Spinners’ sweep

LOWELL, MASS.

On Friday the 13th, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers earned their 13th win and avoided a three-game sweep with a 7-4 win over the Lowell Spinners.

The Scrappers grabbed a first inning lead that they wouldn’t give up. Tyler Naquin started the inning with a one-out single. He scored when Joe Wendle followed with his third triple of the season. Charlie Valerio followed with his first of two doubles to score Wendle. Joe Sever made it 3-0 with a double, one of three hits on the night for the Scrappers, who put it away in the seventh when Valerio struck again.

He drove the first pitch he saw off the top of the wall in left field to score Jairo Kelly and Naquin. Valerio finished the night with two doubles and three RBIs. Pitcher Josh Martin started his second game of the season and turned in another solid performance in picking up his third win of the season. He worked five innings while scattering three hits. He allowed two runs while walking only one and striking out five.

Luis Morel followed with 31/3 innings. He allowed two runs while walking five and striking out five.

Louis Head finished the game with a strikeout to collect his third save.

Mahoning Valley remains on the road for another three-game series. The Hudson Valley Renegades host the Scrappers beginning tonight at 7:05 p.m.
