The Poland library looked more like a scene from a horror film than a place for reading during its Zombie Prom event June 28.

The library welcomed a group of scary and bloody teens to its Zombie Prom, which was a culminating event for teens as part of the summer reading program.

“It was the big teen summer reading event. They don’t have activities throughout the summer. They just have one and it was just a lot of fun,” said Public Library of the Mahoning County Communications and Public Relations Director Janet Loew.

More than 40 teens came dressed in their most scary zombie-like attire ready to enjoy the night. Every aspect of the event was in complete zombie fashion. Participants tested their senses while they enjoyed a game of ‘Pin the Limb on the Human.’ Teens also dove into Jell-O and gummy snacks that were made to look like brains. The event brought teens together socializing with one another and was a success.

“We thought it was very successful. I love seeing the kids come out and have so much fun. Many of the programs are geared toward things that teens are interested in.”

The event was not only a fun-filled experience, but also provided teens an opportunity to experience the variety of options the library has to offer them.

“A big part of the summer reading program is to get kids in the library throughout the summer. We want to instill the concept that reading is a life-long habit, which will encourage them to come in the future,” Loew said.

The summer reading program will continue throughout August and teens can still sign up at any of the 16 libraries in Mahoning County for an opportunity to win prizes.
