1960: John F. Kennedy wins the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot at his party’s convention in Los Angeles.

1987: A $5 million lawsuit filed in 1983 by Don L. Hanni Jr., chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, against GOP chairman Dr. William Binning and others has been dismissed for lack of prosecution.
The historic Johnston Tavern, a stagecoach stop on U.S. Route 19 near Mercer, reopens as an antique shop. The building had been operated as a museum by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission until 1980 when it was closed for lack of funds.
1972: A three-pound section of stone separates from the cornice of the Wick Building and falls 120 feet, striking the cornice of the Strouss building. The combined rubble lands atop a newsstand on the sidewalk.
1962: Raymond Hudock, 15, who would have been a sophomore at New Wilmington Area High School in the fall, is killed when a tractor he was riding on overturned on a private lane a mile east of Pulaski, Pa.,
1937: U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan warns “chiselers” to get off WPA relief roles, or face the consequences if they are exposed by a pending investigation.
Twelve more men indicted as arrested for steel strike violence plead not guilty at arraignment and are released on bonds of $500 or $1,000.
