Boardman Shepherd of the Valley employees and residents partied like it was 1972 in celebration of the facility’s 40th anniversary event on June 24.
“All of our sites are going to be celebrating our 40th anniversary, but each site has a different theme. Ours is ‘Where were you in 1972?’” said Shepherd of the Valley Associate Director, Richard Limongi.
The hallways of Boardman SOV seemed to be taken right out of a page of a 1972 magazine. Books, bikes, cars and pictures from the era decorated the building. Even the food was inspired by popular 1970s culture. Red Barn big and juicy hamburgers with a side of freshly-cut french fries were served, just like the original.
“When we were researching 1972 restaurants, we thought let’s make it nostalgic and we chose Red Barns Restaurant,” Limongi said.
SOV employees enjoyed a photo booth where they snapped pictures of themselves wearing 1970s-inspired attire. Music from John Lennon and other 1970s artists had family and friends reminiscing about what their experiences 40 years ago. The event not only served as a time warp, but gave residents a chance to mingle with loved ones as well as community members.
“It’s fantastic. It’s a really good way to show the community how the Shepherd of the Valley services its residents,” said Dennis Parks, president of the Shepherd of the Valley Board of Directors.
