Lowell spins another win over Scrappers
Staff report
LOWELL, MASS.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers dropped their second straight game to the Lowell Spinners on Thursday. Their lone run came in the eighth inning before falling 10-1.
The Scrappers (12-12) were limited to just four hits. Catcher Richard Stock, appearing in just his fourth game, collected two hits, while Joseph Wendle and Tyler Naquin had the others.
Naquin ripped his fourth double of the season in the eighth inning and Robel Garcia scored on the play for the lone run.
The Spinners (7-17) plated runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
David Chester belted a solo home run in the fourth and Matthew Gedman had a two-run shot in the seventh. They were the fourth and second home runs of the season for them, respectively.
Lowell tallied 10 hits and each team left six runners on base.
Naquin and Wendle each committed an error, their second and third of the season.
Charlie Valerio, the team’s second leading hitter, struck out three times, as did Evan Frazar. Juan Romero struck out four times dropping his average to a team-low .179.
Scrappers starting pitcher Ryan Merritt lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed six hits, five runs (three earned) and didn’t strike out any batters.
One night after blowing a save in the 13th inning, Rafael Holmbert improved with an inning pitched and struck out a pair of batters — the only two strikeouts recorded by Mahoning Valley pitchers.
Justin Haley started the game for Lowell, but left after just 1 1/3 inning. In his place was William Cuevas who was masterful.
He earned his first win and struck out 10 Scrappers in five 2/3 innings. Cuevas only allowed three hits.
Mike Miller, Chester and Gedman each had a pair of hits for the Spinners. Boston Red Sox first-round draft pick Deven Marrero was hitless in five at bats.
Mahoning Valley remains in Lowell tonight for a 7:05 start. The Scrappers will try to avoid a sweep as the Spinners go for their first of the season.
There are four more games left on Mahoning Valley’s road swing. The next home game at Eastwood Field is Tuesday against State College.
