Children enjoyed summer fun and almost forgot they were learning during the 10-week program, Curiosity Camp, at the Boardman YMCA June 22.

“Camp Curiosity is for 6 to 10-year-olds. They are here half a day and we focus on arts and science and we also do swimming,” said camp coordinator Melanie Johnson.

While participants played games in the sun, and splashed in the pool, they were also learning new scientific concepts, like the components of the scientific method, which will help them when school begins in the fall.

“We focus on science experiments or natural observation and we explore through all different kids of mediums. Keeping kids’ minds active will have them more ready in the fall. We made a chicken noise machine, and it was a huge hit. The messier the experiments, the happier they are,” Johnson said.

Camp Curiosity also provides a platform for children to learn life-enriching lessons, such as respect, responsibility, honesty, caring and faith, which are the core values of the YMCA.

“I think this camp is important because it teaches the kids responsibility. I love my job. I get to get up and see the kids,” said camp counselor Taylor Hartman.

Although campers learned a great deal from their experiences, they also inspired happiness for YMCA staff and volunteers.

“You get attached to the kids and they are a great group of kids. They bring a smile to my face and laughter to my heart every day,” Johnson said.
