1812: U.S. forces led by Gen. William Hull invade Canada during the War of 1812 against Britain. (However, Hull retreats shortly thereafter to Detroit.)

1909: The House of Representatives joins the Senate in passing the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allowing for a federal income tax, and submits it to the states. (It is declared ratified in February 1913.)

1962: The Rolling Stones play their first-ever gig at The Marquee in London.

1984: Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale announces he has chosen U.S. Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York to be his running-mate; Ferraro is the first woman to run for vice president on a major-party ticket.

1987: Joyce Barolak, president of the Youngstown chapter of the National Organization for Women, and Ginger Whittington, vice president, say the organization is expected to spend more time focusing on family issues at NOW’s national convention in Philadelphia.

The real estate manager for the Cleveland office of McDonald’s says the restaurant chain is “way underbuilt” in the Youngstown area and is planning several new stores, the first being on Fifth Avenue, across from Stambaugh Auditorium.

1972: Youngstown’s crime rate in the first quarter of the year is down 23 percent from 1971, the lowest rate in 11 years, according to FBI statistics.

Samuel T. Martz is installed as president of Local 1714 , United Auto Workers of America, at the Lordstown Fisher Body plant.

1962: Ground water levels in Mahoning County are almost a foot and a half below a year earlier, reflecting serious moisture shortages around the state due to reduced rain fall.

The FBI laboratory says a submachine gun found by two boys in June in street sewer in the 700 block of Shady Run Road has been identified as the weapon used in the murder of S. Joseph “Sandy” Naples and his girl friend, Mary Ann Vrancich, on the porch of her home at 623 Caledonia St.

1937: With 70 of 83 open hearths in operation, steel output in the Youngstown district is reported at a record 78 percent.

The city engineer’s office begins mapping plans for construction of footbridges over the Erie Railroad tracks at Champion and Phelps streets.
