Scrappers fall to Spinners in 13 innings

LOWELL, MASS.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers took an 11-hour bus ride to Lowell, Mass and spent more than four hours at LeLaechur Park on Wednesday night.

In the longest game of the season, (4:03), the Spinner snapped an 11-game losing streak in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 13th inning, downing the Scrappers, 5-4.

Matthew Gedman single in Kendrick Perkins for the winning run.

Down 2-0 going into the fourth, Mahoning Valley’s Aaron Siliga led off with a triple and and scored on an Erik Gonzalez sacrifice.

The Scrappers (12-11) picked up another in the sixth and took the lead in the eighth when Charlie Valerio drove home Joey Wendle.

Siliga struck again with what was the potential winning run in the top of the 13th when his line drive single brought in Valerio for a 4-3 lead.

Boston Red Sox first-round pick Deven Marrero singled to lead off the bottom half of the inning and he scored the tying run on a David Chester single.

Scrappers starting pitcher Luis DeJesus went six innings and surrendered two runs on two hits, while striking out five.

James Stokes took the loss and Rafael Holmbert was charged with the blown save.

Jairo Kelly and Siliga each had three hits for the Scrappers.

Valerio hit his second home run of the season in the sixth.

Indians first-round draft pick Tyler Naquin went hitless in six at bats, dropping his batting average to .293.

Each team committed two errors and Mahoning Valley out-hit Lowell, 11-10.

The win was the Spinner’s first in July. Their last victory came on June 28 with a 6-5 win in Vermont. They are now 6-17.

After the first off day of the 2012 season on Tuesday, this was the first of a six-game road swing for the Scrappers.

They’ll stay in Lowell for two more games before taking on the Hudson Valley Renegades over the weekend.
