YOUNGSTOWN

Most people drive by without a second glance, but if you slow down and look closely, one of the area’s finest craftsmen and cabinet makers is Andre Silver’s Cabinet Makers, 1029 Market St.

There is little conversation inside the shop as craftsmen are busy working on projects. The only loud noises are the hum of a saw or the spin of a drill or sander.

Silver started working with wood by a chance summer job as he was starting college to become a registered nurse. The summer job put him between two fine craftsmen of wood carpentry. That sparked his love of wood and its ability to be transformed into a fine piece of artistic craftsmanship that becomes an heirloom or centerpiece in a home or business.

Silver has been in the cabinet business for a lifetime and has put his mark on many custom kitchens, cabinets, dens and just about anything made of wood in the Mahoning Valley and across the United States.

Known for his painstaking accuracy and unusual and great craftsmanship, Silver uses only the finest wood and materials as he lovingly watches over every project in the shop.

His craftsmanship is being passed on to his son, Andre Jr., who is picking up the trade and is now working alongside his dad.

Workers stop only for a moment to look at a piece of wood, to see the beauty in its lines and how best to use it in the piece they are crafting.

A nearly completed bookcase gets a final inspection from Silver, and he rubs his hand over the sanded wood the way a painter puts the finishing touches on a piece of art bound for a museum.
