SENIOR SIDELIGHTS
Niles SCOPE Senior Center, 14 E. State St., is offering free hearing tests for anyone age 55 and up on Thursday. The program will begin with a free lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a short talk and the hearing tests. The tests will be administered by the Centers For Hearing Care. Park Vista Retirement Community will have its July Breakfast Club meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Gathering Room, 1216 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. A panel of experts will talk about safety issues that affect everyone over age 55, such as telephone and Internet scams, protecting yourself at home and in the community, and creating an escape and personal safety plan in case of an emergency. Speakers will be Marcia Harris, chief fire inspector, Youngstown Fire Department; Melissa Ames, director of marketing and public relations, Better Business Bureau of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties; and Kay L. Lavelle, Senior Services Unit coordinator for the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office. Reservations are requested for this free Breakfast Club event. Senior Independence Senior Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, has planned the following: Monday, needlecraft at 8:30 a.m. and bridge at 1 p.m.; Tuesday, oil painting at 10 a.m., beginner computer class (advance registration required) at 10, noon and 2 p.m., exercise at noon, intermediate bridge at 12:30 p.m. and Medicare presented by OSHIP from 6 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, field trip to the Alliance Butterfly Garden at 8 a.m. from Lake Milton, watercolors at 10, tap dancing at noon, 500 card club at 1 p.m. and line dancing at 1:30; Thursday, Watch Our Weight and wood carvers at 9 a.m., exercise at noon, Texas Hold’em at 2 p.m. and St. Elizabeth’s Diabetic Support Group Picnic 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and Friday, board games at 9 a.m., cornhole at 2 p.m. and birthday party with live entertainment from 1:30 to 3 p.m., cost is $3.
