Leon’s Sports Bar and Grill, 111 Niles-Cortland Road, is hosting a cancer benefit for Nancy Guerini from noon to 6 p.m. today.

The benefit will feature pasta dinners, $10 for adults and $6 for children, as well as a 50/50 raffle, a basket auction, psychic readings and a poker run. Guerini is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and all the proceeds will go toward the cost of her treatment.

AFSCME Local 1143 to vote on contract

YOUNGSTOWN

A contract ratification meeting for members of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1143, which represents workers in the Youngstown City Schools, will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chaney High School, 731 S. Hazelwood Ave.

Union officials urge all members to attend the session. Mark Snyder is union president, and Loretta Sasinouski is recording secretary.

Suspicious fires

new castle, pa.

Two fires within two hours of each other are suspicious, though they have not been ruled arson, fire department officials reported.

The first fire was at 8:50 p.m. Thursday at a vacant house on Shadyside Avenue, the department said. The house was destroyed.

The second house, also vacant, was on South Ray Street at 10:28 p.m. It, too, was destroyed. That fire melted siding on neighboring houses.

There were no injuries in either fire, the department said.

Road closings

Youngstown

The east, west, north and south sides of Central Square in downtown Youngstown will be closed from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday for the Blue Knights Association’s Our Fallen Officers Memorial Run.

Bike patrol

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University will introduce its new bike patrol at 1 p.m. Monday.

YSU police officers will soon be pedaling across campus. YSU Police Chief John Beshara will be on hand to formally launch the new patrol. The bikes and newly appointed bike patrol officers will be on hand to talk about the new unit.

Mosquito Lakeview Discovery Day set

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mosquito Creek Lake will have its annual Mosquito Lakeview Discovery Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 21 to expose the public to nature and the Lakeview Recreation Area.

It includes a cookout, games, displays and demonstrations to educate on nature and water safety. Special guests include Bobber the Water Safety Dog, the Trumbull County Metro Parks, Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Mosquito State Park naturalist, the Division of Watercraft, the Division of Wildlife, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Mountain Man Trapping.

Other activities include fish identification, insect discovery and collection, scavenger hunt, bird identification, knot tying, disc golf, corn hole and water games. It is open to the public.

PNC day at park

COLUMBIANA

The PNC “Day in the Park” will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in Firestone Park, 347 E. Park Ave. River Hawk will provide the music as part of the summer-concert series at the park’s gazebo.

There will be free refreshments available, and face painting for young and old will be provided.
