Yellow Creek Theatre to open for 8th season
POLAND
The parking lot and area behind the Poland Library are about to get a little busier during the library’s off-hours.
Yellow Creek Theatre opens its eighth summer season at 9 p.m. today with a screening of the 1953 film “The Band Wagon,” starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse.
The theater projects classic movies onto a support column of the U.S. Route 224 bridge that crosses Yellow Creek. The free screenings begin at 9 p.m. and will continue every Friday until Aug. 24 when “Meet Me in St. Louis” starring Judy Garland and Margaret O’Brien will be shown.
Original versions of “The Love Bug” and “Father of the Bride” are among this year’s selection. A complete schedule can be found at www.yellowcreektheatre.com.
This weekend also marks the start a new farmers market on the patio under the U.S. Route 224 bridge, where Yellow Creek Theatre shows films.
The farmers market will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and every Saturday through Oct. 6, said Barbara Delisio of Town One Streetscapes, which is helping to organize the market.
Vendors will offer vegetables, breads, baked goods, preserves and other items, Delisio said. Lisbon-based Dillon Fruit Farm also will sell honey in addition to produce.
“We definitely hope that people shop the farmers market because we’re trying to promote farm-to-table. We wanted to have a place for local farmers to sell their wares and bring food as fresh as possible for people to consume,” Delisio said.
Village officials are pleased with the growth in village activities and praised local volunteers.
“Anytime you can attract people to our town, it helps local merchants and increases awareness of what Poland has to offer,” said Mayor Tim Sicafuse.
“We have a lot of people who put a lot of time and hard work into these events and each year, they get bigger and bigger,” he said.
