Teamwork and cooperation were the only things necessary to succeed during the Kinect Olympics event at the Austintown library June 25.

“It’s for fun and dreaming. It’s all about team play,” said Austintown Children’s librarian Kathe Orr.

In honor of the upcoming Olympics that will take place in London, the library hosted a small competition of its own for children to enjoy themselves and build their teamwork skills. Throughout the event, several virtual games, including, golf, hurdles and baseball were played on the Xbox Kinect while children competed against each other. Although friendly competition roared through the event, good sportsmanship remained at the forefront of every activity. Participants were encouraged to cheer for their own teammates as well as their opponents. Parents and librarians watched as kids darted back and forth, running and jumping as high as they could.

“It’s really fun for kids to do and with the Olympic theme it works really well. It makes me feel really good to get to meet new moms,” said Nikki Puhalla.

The event not only provided a fun way for children to socialize and meet others their age, but it was also an opportunity to show what other options the library has to offer.

“We wanted to have fun and support good sportsmanship. We also wanted to show that the library was more than just books,” said Main Children’s Librarian Allie Graf.
