LOWELLVILLE
A major paving and sidewalk project is finished, and other projects are going to start, said Mayor Jim Iudiciani.
The paving of River Road from the Struthers city limits into Lowellville was completed last week, he said Tuesday.
The $613,000 project also included paving on Jackson Street and sidewalks on Jackson and McGaffney streets.
About 80 percent of the project was federally funded, most of the rest of it was state- funded, and the village spent $39,000, he said.
Iudiciani said the village is soliciting bids to repair a slumping embankment on Third Street. He said contractors will build a retaining wall there.
That project is part of a larger one that included curbs and storm-water catch basins on East Wood Street, he said. The entire project cost $200,000, he said, with state funding making up the bulk of the money used. Mahoning County contributed a $49,000 Community Development Block Grant, and the village spent $29,000.
The village also has a state grant for $442,000 to upgrade its sidewalks, he said. It will solicit bids for The Safe Routes to Schools project in the spring, he said. There will be no expense to the village for the project, which promotes safe walking and biking to school, he said.
The county commissioners also have awarded federal Community Development Block Grant funds for sidewalk improvements, road widening and a parking area on Liberty Street from Third to Sixth streets.
The grant is for $110,000, and the village will spend $15,000 on the project, he said. Work will begin in the spring, he added.
