Arts will enrich your life
By Lori Factor
Chances are we all identify with the arts in some way. We may not paint, sing, write poetry, act or perform; but every time we take a child to a musical event or an art class, buy a ticket to a concert or play, or just visit the exhibits at a local gallery or museum, we are engaging with the arts and culture in the Valley.
Arts community
The Mahoning Valley has a rich and vibrant arts community, beginning with the very people who create visual and performing art. Artists invigorate our community with their enthusiasm and passion, and we are collectively the beneficiaries of their talent. Others provide space for artists and performers to use, which helps to cultivate and sustain existing and new efforts. Still others financially support the arts and culture through contributions and services. All are critical to nurturing our arts community.
Programs affiliated with the arts and culture are easy targets when budget cuts are looming. But consider this: In his book, “The Rise of the Creative Class,” Richard Florida observes that diversity and creativity combine to drive population growth and that creativity is the key factor powering employment growth. The National Guild for Community Art Education says that community arts education programs also build social capital, foster democratic decision making, advance economic growth, and generate a sense of shared culture and community belonging. And ArtPlace America states, “art creates vibrancy and increases economic opportunity. It is all about the local.”
Local listings
It doesn’t take an art or music degree to enjoy the arts; the arts are available to all. Start by checking out local listings in the media (The Vindicator offers a comprehensive list of events every Thursday) to see what interests you. Then make the time to participate. You won’t be disappointed, and chances are you will come away delighted, interested and eager for more. Many activities are free, and all are worth the effort.
This weekend our community will showcase the arts and culture during the Summer Festival of the Arts at and around YSU; the Youngstown Jazz Fest at Harrison Common; Smoky Hollow 5K and the St. Nicholas Greek Church Summerfest. Partnerships have flourished between the public and private sectors to bring our community a weekend of arts and culture. Let this weekend be the springboard for your own arts and cultural journey. There is truly something for everyone, and I invite you to explore and enjoy it all.
Lori A. Factor is assistant director of the Performing Arts Series at YSU and coordinator of this weekend’s Summer Festival of the Arts.
