WARREN

Even when you’re a beloved native son who helped his team win February’s Super Bowl by making a huge sideline catch late in the game, you still have to obey the traffic laws.

Warren G. Harding High School standout Mario Manningham, whose catch helped the New York Giants, found that out early Saturday on East Market Street.

He received a citation from a Warren police officer for stopping his vehicle and blocking traffic at 2:58 a.m. near Elm Road. A relative paid the minor misdemeanor traffic citation Monday, officials said.

Fines also were paid last year after Manningham, whose address is on Oak Knoll Avenue, was charged with speeding by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in May 2011 and with having tinted windows by the highway patrol in July 2011.

Patrol investigates fatal SUV accident

HOWLAND

Troopers with the Southington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a 1:50 a.m. one- vehicle fatal accident Monday on North Road, just north of Atlantic Street Northeast.

The driver and only occupant, Antonio Donatelli, 34, of Warren, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Donatelli was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which sustained extensive damage. The vehicle was northbound on North Road and failed to negotiate a curve near Atlantic Street, went off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, the patrol reported.

Also assisting troopers at the scene were Howland Township police and fire departments.

Residents of Newton Falls reported several bear sightings over the weekend, the most recent ones at 11:18 p.m. Sunday on South Canal Street near the city park and at 4 p.m. Sunday on West Jay Street.

Residents also reported bear sightings at 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Warren Road and Ticknor Avenue. This is the first time this summer a bear has been sighted in the village, a police dispatcher said.

The sightings didn’t involve any injuries or property damage.

Sites evacuated after odor detected

NILES

Macali’s Giant Eagle, 48 Vienna Ave., was evacuated Monday morning after a gaslike odor was detected at the business.

The smell was later determined to be freon, a refrigerant, coming from the freezers or coolers in the back of the store, Capt. Ken Criswell of the Niles Police Department said.

The store, the Niles City Schools administrative offices and a nearby coin-operated laundry were also evacuated, but all three were allowed to reopen by 11 a.m. after the source was determined and aired out, Criswell said.

Two store employees and one firefighter got unsteady on their feet for a time from the fumes, but they recovered and did not seek medical attention, Criswell said.
