5 area gymnasts earn honors at nationals

POLAND

Zoe Weaver, Grace George and Celina Gaudio each earned national all-around titles to lead a strong showing by five gymnasts from Kathi’s Dance & Gym Center at the 2012 Amateur Athletic Union gymnastics age group national championships on June 20-24 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis.

Weaver, a 15-year-old competing in the prep division, placed first on bars, first on beam, second on floor and third on vault to place first in the all-around.

Grace George, a 14-year-old Level 7 gymnast, finished first on bars, first on beam, second on floor, first on vault and first in the all-around.

Gaudio, a 17-year-old Level 7 gymnast, placed first on bars, second on beam, third on floor, seventh on vault and first in the all-around.

Abby George, a 9-year-old Level 5 gymnast, placed first on bars, sixth on beam, third on floor, eighth on vault and third in the all-around at her first national competition.

Samantha Smith, a 12-year-old in the prep division, placed 16th on bars, 15th on beam (with a personal-best score), 21st on floor, 24th on vault and 20th in the all-around. This was the largest age group in the competition.

The girls are coached by Chris Bednarik and Chad Cleland.

The competition included 16 districts, 88 gyms and more than 1,000 athletes.

Football

Martuccio chosen to represent Browns

INDIANAPOLIS

Brandon Martuccio, a two-year starter at right guard for Girard, was one of six linemen from northeast Ohio selected to represent the Cleveland Browns at the NFL’s high school player development camp July 12-15.

The camp features a national 7-on-7 tournament for high school quarterbacks and receivers with all 32 NFL teams represented.

This is the first year linemen have been invited to participate.

Zallow wins hurdles

ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Warren JFK sophomore-to-be Chad Zallow won the 110-meter hurdles at last weekend’s USA youth track & field championships at Maverick Stadium at the University of Texas-Arlington.

Zallow ran a 15.08. He was a Division III district champion in the 110 and 300 hurdles as a freshman this spring and the only freshman in any division to qualify for June’s state meet.

Ray to junior nationals

HOUSTON

Columbiana sophomore-to-be Shayla Ray will compete in the high jump at the AAU Junior Olympic nationals in Houston July 28-Aug. 2.

Ray won the high jump, placed third in the long jump and second in the 110 hurdles at the district qualifier, then placed second in the high jump at the national qualifier in Jacksonville, Fla., with a leap of 5 feet.
