Wendle, Scrappers drop Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, PA.
Joseph Wendle went 3-for-6 with a double and four RBIs for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, who opened their three-game series at Williamsport with a 9-1 victory on Sunday.
Tyler Naquin added a double, two singles and a run for the Scrappers (7-7), who have won four straight.
Leadoff hitter Jairo Kelly had two hits, scored three runs and drove in a run for Mahoning Valley, which collected 13 hits. Charlie Valerio scored two runs.
Ryan Merritt (2-1) started and pitched six shutout innings, giving up six hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Rafael Homblert gave up a run in his inning of work. Cody Penn then pitched 11/3 innings and Luis Encarnacion got the final two outs.
Jonathan Musser (0-3) started for Williamsport and lasted just two innings, giving up two runs on four hits and five walks.
Luis Gonzalez came on in relief and lasted 32/3 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
Roman Quinn, Trey Ford and Larry Greene each had two hits for the Crosscutters (7-7), who have lost two straight.
The teams play the next two nights in Williamsport before the Scrappers head home for a six-game homestand against Aberdeen and Connecticut beginning Tuesday night at Eastwood Field.
