USW to honor Ryan

USW to honor Ryan

Columbus

The United Steelworkers of America plans to present certificates of appreciation to Reps. Tim Ryan of Niles and Marcy Kaptur of Toledo to thank them for co-sponsoring the Bring Jobs Home Act. Both are Democrats.

The ceremony for Ryan will be today at the congressman’s Warren office.

The Bring Jobs Home Act, introduced by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., in the Senate and by Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., in the House will eliminate tax breaks that allow companies to deduct expenses associated with moving operations overseas, while still encouraging them to assist displaced workers. It also would provide a tax credit to corporations that bring jobs back to the United States.

Steelworkers across the country are contacting their congressional representatives to let them know that American workers need this legislation now more than ever, as the U.S. has seen 50,000 manufacturing sites close and 6 million jobs disappear because of outsourcing, with Ohio among the states hardest hit, the USW says.

Ohi nuclear plant’s reactor No. 3 returned to operation despite a deep division in public opinion. Last month, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda ordered the restarts of reactors No. 3 and nearby No. 4, saying people’s living standards can’t be maintained without nuclear energy.

NY utility, union talks collapse

new york

Consolidated Edison closed walk-in centers, suspended meter readings and limited work on major construction projects in New York on Sunday after contract talks between the utility and its unionized workers broke down in the middle of a wave of extremely hot weather.

Negotiations stopped just before 2 a.m. Sunday, a couple of hours after the existing contract expired. The impasse came as New York braced for more high temperatures that will raise demand for air conditioning among the utility’s 3.2 million customers.
