Air-quality advisory issued for area today

The Eastgate Regional Council of Governments has issued an air-quality advisory for the Mahoning Valley today.

Light winds Monday will limit pollutant dispersion, but very high temperatures and mostly sunny skies will support ozone formation.

Festival of the Arts

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University’s Summer Festival of the Arts will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on and around the university campus.

The event will include artists, music, dance and theater performances, displays by cultural groups and family activities.

The festival also includes the Youngstown Jazz Fest at 5 p.m. Saturday at Harrison Common on Walnut Street, where admission is free and attendees should bring a folding chair.

Over the same weekend, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Summerfest will be at St. Nicholas Church, 220 N. Walnut St.

Jambar reunion

Youngstown State University alumni who once worked at The Jambar, YSU’s student newspaper, are invited to the first Jambar alumni reunion at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Christman Dining Commons on campus.The Jambar is Youngstown State University’s official student newspaper.

Fallen Officers event

YOUNGSTOWN

Motorcyclists will assemble between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Sunday on West Federal Street in the city’s downtown to register for the 10th annual Fallen Officers Memorial Run in memory of Youngstown Police Officer Michael Hartzell.

With an opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m., the event, which will take place rain or shine, is sponsored by the Blue Knights of Youngstown.

The fee is $15 per rider and $10 per passenger, including a meal. Hartzell was shot and killed in downtown Youngstown while on duty in April 2003.

Exotic animal show

YOUNGSTOWN

Library visitors will be able to meet, touch and learn about exotic animals during the free Outback Ray exotic animal show at 2 p.m. next Monday at the main public library, 305 Wick Ave., and at 2 p.m. July 16 at the Austintown public library, 600 S. Raccoon Road.

Special advocates

YOUNGSTOWN

Volunteers are being sought for the Court- Appointed Special Advocates program in the Mahoning County Juvenile Court.

After 30 hours of classroom training concerning abused and neglected children, volunteers are appointed as guardians ad litem for dependent children. They agree to follow a case for a year and volunteer for an average of 10 to 15 hours per month before recommending in writing to the court where the child should reside.
