Teacher of the year
The American College of Osteopathic Internists has honored Dr. Jane D’Isa-Smith by selecting her as the 2012 Teacher of the Year.
Recognition of her contribution to the College and profession will be made during the Convocation of Fellows in October in Orlando, Fla.
Dr. D’Isa-Smith was also named one of the best doctors in Cleveland for the third year by her peer group.
She attended St. Christine Elementary School and graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1985. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Bowling Green State University in 1989 and her medical degree at Ohio University in 1992. She is currently on the staff at South Pointe Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Health System.
Dr. D’Isa-Smith is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frank A. D’Isa. She is married to Sean Smith and they have four children. They live in Hudson.
DOCTORATE
English degree
Diana L. Awad Scrocco of Poland graduated with a doctorate in English: Literacy, Rhetoric, and Social Practice, from Kent State University in May.
Her dissertation was titled, “An Examination of the Literate Practices of Resident Physicians and Attending Physician Preceptors in a Resident-Run Internal Medicine Clinic.”
Dr. Awad Scrocco was a 2002 salutatorian of Cardinal Mooney High School and a University Scholar who graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from Youngstown State University in 2006. She earned her master’s degree in English from Kent State University in 2008.
In August, she will begin an appointment at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as a teaching assistant professor and the associate director of the Global Communication Center.
Biostatistics degree
Zachary Thompson, formerly of Austintown, son of Sandra and John Russo of Sarasota, Fla., and Carol and Lloyd Thompson, of Austintown, has received his doctoral degree in biostatistics from the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida.
He is a graduate of Fitch High School, Youngstown State University, and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. Dr. Thompson is a research data analyst at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. He lives with his wife, Rebecca, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
DOCTORS
Radiology residency
Jarrett Steffy graduated recently from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens. He is a 2004 graduate of Liberty High School and a 2008 graduate of Youngstown State University.
Dr. Steffy lives in Harrison Township, Mich., and will enter a radiology residency at McLaren Macomb Hospital.
He is the son of Jill Steffy of Girard and Robert Steffy of Boardman.
Cardiology training
John David Scrocco of Poland completed his post-graduate fellowship training in cardiology at Case Western Reserve University/MetroHealth Medical Center this month.
Dr. Scrocco is a 1997 graduate of Canfield High School. He graduated summa cum laude from Youngstown State University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree and from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2005 with his doctor of medicine degree.
He completed an internal medicine residency in 2008 at Summa Health System in Akron, where he served as chief resident from 2008-2009.
This month he will join Humility of Mary Health Partners as a cardiologist with Diagnostic Cardiology Associates.
LAW DEGREES
Juris doctorates
Kayce M. Kasten, daughter of Kirk and Emily Kasten, Mock Road, Berlin Center, recently graduated from Ohio Northern’s Pettit College of Law at Ohio Northern University, where she earned her juris doctorate.
Kasten was active in the President’s Club, a select group of highly involved students, the Law Review Publication and its editorial board, the Federalist Society, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity and the College Republican Club.
She received her undergraduate degree from Ohio Northern University.
Joseph J. Kunkel, son of Thomas and Deborah Kunkel, 725 Pennsylvania Ave., McDonald, recently graduated from Ohio Northern’s Pettit College of Law at Ohio Northern University, where he earned his juris doctorate.
Kunkel was active in the Burke Smith Mock Trial Competition, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity and the Sports Law Society.
He received his undergraduate degree from Ohio University.
STATE PATROL
New sergeant
Larry P. Jones Jr. was promoted to the rank of sergeant recently by Col. John Born, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Jones will transfer from his most recent assignment at the Warren Post to serve as an assistant post commander at the Chardon Post.
Jones joined the patrol in December 2004 and received his commission in June the following year and was assigned to the Findlay Post. In 2006, he transferred to the Chardon Post before transferring to his most recent assignment at the Warren Post in 2008.
Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Toledo in 2004.
He lives in Warren with his wife, Corey, and their two children Carter, 3, and Adalyn, 1.
