Rachel Helena McGowan and Richard Lawrence McCarthy, both of McLean, Va., were married May 21, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church. The 2 p.m. ceremony was concelebrated by the Rev. Dr. Erwin M. Smuda and Monsignor David W. Rhodes.

Before leaving on a wedding trip to California, the couple received congratulations at a reception at Avalon Golf and Country Club in Buhl Park in Hermitage, Pa.

They are making their home in McLean.

The bride is the daughter of Richard and Melinda McGowan of Canfield, and the groom is the son of Richard and Lauren McCarthy of Youngstown.

The bride wore an ivory silk organza strapless ball gown embellished with embroidered and cutout floral accents, featuring a silk satin draped sash and bow.

Erin Conroy, wearing a blossom pink dress, attended the bride as maid of honor. Similarly attired were her bridesmaids: Caroline Olson and Lisa Mejac, both cousins of the bride, and Samantha Noble. The flower girl was Sarah Hartwig.

Steven McCarthy performed the duties of best man for his brother, and groomsmen were Patrick McCarthy, another brother of the groom, and Adam Buzzacco and Kenneth Talanian. Serving as ushers were Ethan Olson, Christian Olson and Todd Mejac, all cousins of the bride, and Stephen Hiser.

Mrs. McCarthy graduated with honors from Duquesne University, where she earned a degree in political science. She is a legislative analyst for the Motorcycle Industry Council in Arlington, Va.

Mr. McCarthy is a graduate of Georgetown University with a degree in finance and accounting. He is a Washington federal practice consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in McLean.
