Crackdown on selling alcohol to minors

The police department’s vice squad summoned four employees and arrested one at four establishments Saturday after observing the sale of alcohol to minors, according to police reports.

Using undercover 19- and 20-year-old males, police observed the employees at Schenley Carryout, 2725 Mahoning Ave.; Somewhere Else Bar, 2426 Mahoning Ave.; Ultimate Food Mart, 911 Belmont Ave.; and Irish Bob’s, 3602 South Ave., sell alcohol to the underage males, reports said.

All four suspects were charged with underage sale of alcohol and are due in Youngstown Municipal Court at 9 a.m. today.

Police arrested Derrick Sharpe, 34, of 372 Fairgreen Ave., a bartender at Somewhere Else Bar. Police said he served a customer cocaine and had marijuana in his pocket. He was charged with felony drug trafficking and three misdemeanors. Sharpe also will be in municipal court at 9 a.m. today.

Accidents on I-80

West Middlesex, pa.

Three separate accidents involving six cars slowed traffic on Interstate 80 Sunday, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The accidents took place at mile marker 7 on the eastbound side. State police said there were no serious injuries but were not sure if anyone was taken to the hospital.

Police are still investigating.

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, will honor the holiday of Tu B’shvat with a special screening of “The Land of Genesis” from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 8. The nature film was produced in Israel.

Tu B’shvat is associated with the care of all plants in the world and particularly in Israel. Those attending will eat traditional dried fruits while learning about the ecological state of Israel. The program is free. Light snacks will be served.

Youngstown Area PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays), YSUnity and the congregation of the Unitarian Church are hosting the Feb. 7 appearance of Youngstown native Gary Daniels, Ohio American Civil Liberties Union associate director.
