TRUMBULL COUNTY

Tuesday: Guest speaker John C. Fazio will give a free presentation “The Proclamation that Saved a Nation,” at 6 p.m. at Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863. Fazio said the document was prepared for moral, political, economic and military reasons. The presentation will explore these reasons, the three different interpretations of the proclamation and its immediate and long-term effects. The presentation also will cover the 13th Amendment and how later generations of African-Americans viewed both documents. The 13th Amendment, adopted in 1865, officially abolished slavery in the United States. Fazio has bachelor’s and law degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He is a member of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable and has been its president. He frequently speaks about the Civil War to groups and has written and published numerous articles about the war.

Feb. 18: The YWCA Warren, in partnership with Seekers of True African History, or SOTAH, will host its first conference, “From Africa to America,” at the YWCA Warren, 375 North Park Ave., from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The conference is free and designed to re-educate people about Africans and their rightful place in history and will cover topics such as Africans in the Bible, the civil rights movement, African music and dance and biographies of great Africans and black Americans.
