Penguin track wins 5 events at YSU Invitational

Youngstown State’s indoor track and field team won five events at Friday’s 15-team YSU Invitational at the WATTS.

On the women’s side, sophomores Anna Pompeo and Katrina Rettburg along with senior Laura Kosiorek won events.

Pompeo won the 5,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 18:08.66, which ranks eighth all-time at YSU. Ketey Heney finished in fifth with her personal-best time of 18:45.42.

In the mile, Samantha Hamilton took second in 4:58.01, two seconds shy of her personal-best. Heather Coonfare finished in 5:40.22 while Alexis Cooper ran 5:47. 02.

Kosiorek and Nicole Rymer finished first and second, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Kosiorek had a time of 8.87 with Rymer coming in at 8:95. Kendall Homan placed fifth in a time of 9.33.

Ciara Jarrett took third in the 200 in 25.03 and fifth in the 60 (7.89).

The 4x400m relay team of Nicole Pachol, Jarrett, Washington, and Alteeka Vanwright placed first in 4:01.27.

In the field events, Rettburg won the high jump with a mark of 1.68 meters. Leanna Hartsough’s personal-best of 1.64 was good for third while Makayla Martin’s jump of 1.62 finished in fifth.

Hanna Ropp hit a season-best pole vault mark of 3.27 meters — the second-highest mark in school history.

Kaitlyn Griffith finished fourth in the shot put, throwing 13.75 meters.

On the men’s side, Michael Davis captured first in the 60 with a time of 6.98. He placed second in the 200 in 22.30.

Eric Rupe was second in the mile with a time of 4:17.82 — hundredths of a second off of his personal-best. Freshman Austin McLean ran a personal-best time of 4:24.16, good for fourth place.

In the 60 hurdles, Martin Solomon placed third with a time of 8.36 with teammate Clay Febus fourth place (8.45).

In the field events, Dorian Davis and Dan Skiba went one-two in the long jump. Davis’ jump of 7.01 is the second-longest in school history while Skiba’s 6.83 ties the fourth-longest in school history.

John Sever took third in the shot put, throwing a personal-best 16.68. His throw ranks third on YSU’s top ten charts.

With a weight throw mark of 16.57, George Thomas finished fifth.
