Poland seventh-grade girls have mixed results
The Poland seventh-grade girls basketball team lost to Austintown Red 30-23 on Jan. 4. Jillian Penman scored eight points for the Bulldogs. Carlie Lattanzio and Joelle Abi Habib added four.
The girls then defeated Niles Red 23-10 on Jan. 19. Penman was the top scorer for Poland with 11. Julia Cooper, Emily Melnek and Emily Cammack added four points each as the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 on the season.
On Jan. 11, Poland fell in a defensive battle to Struthers, losing 12-9. Emily Melnek scored six points for the Bulldogs.
On Jan. 17, Poland took on Niles. Emily Cammack scored a season-high 13 points for the Bulldogs as Poland defeated Niles, 34-20. Julia Cooper and Emily Melnek had eight points apiece, while Penman added five.
Poland girls defeat Salem
The Poland girls varsity basketball team defeated Salem 41-24 on Jan. 17. Poland led at halftime 20-11.
Top scorer for the Bulldogs was Abbie Frank with 15 points. Katie Bercherer and Maura Bobby each added six points.
Poland seeks varsity volleyball coach
Poland Seminary High School is looking to fill the position of head girls varsity volleyball coach. Interested applicants should submit a resume and letter of interest by Wednesday to Brian Banfield, athletic director, 3199 Dobbins Road, Poland.
Hochendoner selected
Jake Hochendoner of Oberlin College and a graduate of Poland High School was selected as a senior All-American by USA College Sports.
Hochendoner, an All-NCAC defensive end, finished his football career at Oberlin ranked fourth all-time in career sacks (13.5) and tied for fifth all-time for sacks in a season (6).
