Artist plans to bury 727 jetliner in Calif. desert

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.

A Swiss artist plans to bury an intact Boeing 727 jetliner in California’s Mojave Desert and build a tourist tunnel to give visitors a chance to view the underground project.

Christoph Buchel has applied for a Kern County conditional-use permit that will allow him to bury the 153-foot-long decommissioned airliner west of Boron. It’s not far from the desert’s aircraft boneyard.

The Bakersfield Californian reports the project, dubbed “Terminal,” already has planning-department staff approval.

The jetliner would be buried 38 feet below the surface.

Visitors will be able to experience the subterranean art project via an underground tunnel connecting the plane to a parking area. They’ll be able to use the plane’s restrooms, which will be connected to a septic system.

Police: False teeth taken in Pa. vehicle break-ins

BRIDGEVILLE, Pa.

Police are trying to find the thief who made off with a woman’s false teeth during a series of vehicle break-ins in western Pennsylvania.

Bridgeville police say they believe the thief hit 17 cars in two nights, including one that had Kathy Saunoras’ teeth inside.

Saunoras says her car was unlocked, but her window was smashed anyway. The dentures were the only thing taken, and she says it’ll cost her $500 to replace them.

Wyoming 19-year-old fined $200 for doughnut theft

POWELL, Wyo.

A 19-year-old college student accused of swiping a doughnut in Wyoming is going to be paying a pretty penny for that pastry.

The Northwest Trail reports that Zach O’Dell has agreed to pay a $200 fine, $10 in court costs — and 79 cents to cover the cost of the doughnut.

O’Dell was accused of eating the treat in Blair’s Market in Powell on Nov. 28 and leaving without paying for it. He was charged with shoplifting.

Attorney Sandra Kitchen says she has deferred the prosecution, and the charge will be dismissed in six months if O’Dell stays out of trouble.

Potty-room pilfering: Auto flushers stolen in Ohio

COLUMBUS

A restroom rip-off in central Ohio has automatic flushers disappearing from the bathrooms at restaurants and other businesses. Police say it’s been happening in at least a couple Columbus suburbs. Investigators don’t know if the thefts are related.

Handyman John Hahn tells WBNS-TV the flushers likely are being stolen for scrap because they contain a metal called red brass that can bring $2.50 per pound.

He says safeguards are needed because the flushers can be costly to repair.
