Library offers new free eBook download service

WARREN

A new free electronic book download service is now available to cardholders of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, the first library in Ohio to adopt it.

The service, called Freading, offers library patrons access to more than 20,000 titles on multiple mobile devices as an app. Compatible devices include the Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple iPad and iPhone, most Android-based tablets and smartphones, the Kobo eReader and the Sony Reader. The Amazon Kindle does not yet support Freading.

Patrons can download books each week based on a virtual token system. Each cardholder will receive six tokens per week, and each download requires one to four tokens, depending on the book’s popularity and publication date. Unused tokens may accumulate over a four-week period. Books may be checked out for two weeks, and most items may be renewed once without additional tokens.

Patrons can log in to Freading through the library’s website, download the Adobe Digital Editions software to their device, create an account, search for a title and click to download.

The library is offering eBook help sessions from noon to 2 p.m. every Friday, today through Feb. 24 in the Thomas Meeting Room at the Main Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW. Staff will teach patrons how to transfer eBooks from Freading to their own device by providing one-on-one assistance with the basic operation of an eReader, and demonstrating how to connect a device to a computer and download an eBook to a device. Patrons should take their device and its computer connection cable, and make sure the device is fully charged.

The eBook help sessions are free and open to the public. No registration is required.
