Fewer than 20 percent of all pieces entered into the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition are awarded “keys” that represent levels of achievement.

Eight art students from Canfield High School received these honors for pieces they completed during the first semester of the 2011-12 school year.

Senior Nathalie McClune, junior Kierstin Gladwell, senior Korinne Sackela and senior Elise Huzjak won Gold Key Awards for their artwork. Gold keys are the highest achievement on the regional level and pieces that earn them are considered for recognition on a national level.

Senior Rachel Mikolay and junior Marisa Desanto were also American Vision Nominees: two of five pieces selected across Gold Key works to be the “Best of Show” for each region.

Silver Key Awards, an honor awarded to only 10 to 15 percent of submissions, were awarded to junior Kellie Daley, senior Lindsay Tapia and Mikolay for another of her pieces.

“I was so happy that I won this year,” said McClune, who plans on going into digital art. “It took such a long time and I was very proud of it by the time it was done.”

Upcoming art shows for Canfield art students include the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition and the Mahoning County Annual Art Show.
