The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is offering instructor training for CPR/AED, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens and other American Red Cross courses. Classes are at Boardman training center, 8381 Market St., on consecutive weekdays, Feb. 2 and 3, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The fee is $500.

HOPE program expands at Jameson

New Castle, PA.

Jameson Health System is expanding its interactive wellness and lifestyle improvement program HOPE (Highmark Osteoporosis Prevention & Education), which focuses on healthy choices to improve bone health and prevent or manage osteoporosis including nutrition, exercise, stress management, supplementation and other lifestyle habits.

One class each week features a guest lecturer and discussion, and one is group exercise using stretch bands. There is no charge for Highmark Insurance and Gateway Insurance members, but there is a minimal charge for others.

Classes are offered three times per year at the Jameson Hospital North Campus, 1211 Wilmington Ave. The dates are Feb. 13, 17, 20, 24, 27, March 2, 5, 9 from noon to 12:45 p.m.; June 6, 13, 20, 27 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; and Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Dr. Piccione to give talk on heart disease

HERMITAGE, PA.

In honor of American Heart Month, Dr. Elizabeth Piccione, cardiologist with the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC Horizon, will discuss the symptoms and risk factors for heart disease and what women can do to manage their health on Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, 875 N. Hermitage Road.

A question and answer session will follow her presentation, and refreshments will be served.

Easter Seals offers program for youth

YOUNGSTOWN

Easter Seals of Mahoning County is offering the Operation Search and Help Program funded by a grant from the Hine Memorial Fund of the Youngstown Foundation.

The focus of the program is to assist families of special needs children birth to 21 with medications, medical equipment, medical supplies, specialized formulas and transportation assistance to out-of-town medical appointments.

BackPack program now in Struthers

Youngstown

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley has expanded its BackPack Program to include Struthers Elementary School. The expansion is funded by a three-year commitment of $67,500 from the SJK Fund, a component fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

The BackPack Program is designed to meet the needs of children on weekends and holidays when other resources for food are not available. Each Friday, BackPack Program participants receive a bag of child-friendly, nutritious food to take home over the weekend.
