Ohiio Buffalo Soldier honored in Congressional Record

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Ohio member of the black U.S. Army troops known as Buffalo Soldiers has been honored in the Congressional Record.

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio made the entry today honoring contributions by Col. Charles Young, who died in 1922.

American Indians gave the name Buffalo Soldiers to black soldiers on the western frontier in the 19th century. The House on today approved a resolution for a study of ways to commemorate and interpret Buffalo Soldiers’ roles in the early years of America’s national parks.

Turner says Young was acting superintendent of Sequoia National Parks in California and was the third black person to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Young also commanded troops during the Spanish-American War.

Young’s Wilberforce home is on the National Register of Historic Places.
