Teen charged in shooting of friend faces traffic citations

Staff report

Boardman

A Canfield teen charged in the shooting of his friend was cited over the weekend for running a red light and causing a two-car crash.

Marc Z. Hood, 18, of Canfield, was cited by the Ohio State Highway Patrol for a red-light violation, seat-belt violation and driving without a license.

Sgt. Bret Henderson, of OSHP Canfield post, said Hood ran a red light on Midlothian Boulevard about 7 p.m. Saturday and struck a vehicle driven by Tierra Rankins, 19, of Youngstown, who was heading South on Hillman Street.

Both drivers and their passengers — each had three in their vehicles — were taken to local hospitals and later released. Henderson said no one was seriously injured.

Henderson said Hood told troopers he went through the light because he thought it was yellow. Investigators don’t believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Hood is scheduled for a Wednesday arraignment on the citations in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman.

He’s out on bond after being accused of shooting 18-year-old Sean Swegan in the stomach Jan. 11. He’s charged in that case with felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Hood told police he got the gun from his grandfather and planned to use it to scare Swegan as a prank.

A representative from Mahoning County Area Court in Canfield said he doubt’s Hood’s bond will be revoked because the citations were minor misdemeanors.

Hood will return to Canfield court at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 10 for a pretrial hearing on the felony charges.
