1 dead, 3 hurt after semi crashes on Ohio Turnpike

FREMONT, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a tractor-trailer veered into a work zone on the Ohio Turnpike, killing one worker and seriously injuring two others and the truck driver.

The crash this morning near Fremont shut down the turnpike’s westbound lanes about 30 miles southeast of Toledo and caused a traffic backup for several miles.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the crash occurred. A patrol spokeswoman says two highway workers and the truck driver were flown from the scene for medical treatment.

As traffic backed up, authorities were urging turnpike travelers to find alternate westbound routes. The patrol and the Ohio Department of Transportation were rerouting traffic around the crash site.
