Ex-Ohio death row inmate expected back in jail Tuesday

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Authorities expect a Scotsman released from Ohio’s death row about four years ago to be back in a jail cell in the state on Tuesday.

The Lima News reports Ken Richey gave up his right to an extradition hearing in Tupelo, Miss., after being arrested on Ohio charges of retaliation and violating a civil-protection order. Richey had been living in the city and Putnam County, Ohio, sheriff’s deputies were headed today to pick him up.

Authorities say the 47-year-old Richey left a threatening phone message at the northwest Ohio courthouse where he was sentenced to death nearly 25 years ago.

Richey walked free in 2008 under a plea deal after a federal court overturned his death sentence. He’d been convicted of starting a fire that killed a toddler.
