Sanfreys reach 70-year milestone in their marriage

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sanfrey Sr. of Warren celebrated their 70th anniversary Jan. 9 with family and friends.

Mr. Sanfrey and the former Esther Preston were married on that date in 1942 at Central Christian Church.

The couple have four children: Donald Sanfrey Jr. (Sonny) of Studio City, Calif.; Karen L. Wright of Youngstown; Debra L. Horvath of Warren; and Valerie J. (Michael) Lipps of Mount Airy, Md.

They also have five grandchildren, Eric Tarr, Michael, Rachael and Sarah Horvath and Amber Lipps, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sanfrey, a former Ohio State Highway Patrol officer, retired from General Motors Lordstown Complex in 1985 as a supervisor in the MVSS Department.

He is a World War II veteran who served in the Army Military Police while stationed in the Philippines. He served in 2000 as national president of the 37th Division of Army Veterans.

In 1998, Mr. Sanfrey was inducted into the Legends of Leather Club Boxing Hall of Fame, and he sponsors the annual Fighting Sanfrey Family Award.

He served as high priest counselor for 14 years with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mrs. Sanfrey worked at Packard Electric for several years before becoming a homemaker. She later returned to work and retired from S.S. Kresge Co. in 1972 as a department manager.

Mrs. Sanfrey served as national president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the 37th Division of Army Veterans. She taught Sunday school and was second counselor in the Women’s Relief Society Auxiliary for the LDS church.
