Some phone service restored in Campbell

Staff report

CAMPBELL

Telephone service was restored to the Campbell Police Department and other city offices at about 10:15 p.m. Friday following a Wednesday outage caused by damage to an underground cable.

On Friday, calls to the police, fire and water departments were being rerouted through cell phones. Calls were still getting through to the police and fire departments during the outage.

The Mahoning County dispatch center radioed Campbell 9-1-1 calls to police and fire, so 9-1-1 service was not interrupted.

A spokeswoman for AT&T, which owns the cable, said she could not provide information on how widespread the outage was, how many residents are still without service or how long the repairs will take.

A report from a crew member at the site of the outage said the damaged cable served 2,500 people.

Phone service was knocked out around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
