Crews were still working Friday on repairing an underground telephone cable that was damaged by digging, city and AT&T officials said.

Sherman Miles, the city’s finance director, said phone service was restored to many of the offices at the city building on Tenney Avenue, though main numbers for the police, fire and water departments were still being rerouted through cellphones.

Miles said that would ensure uninterrupted service until the cable is fixed.

The Mahoning County dispatch center radios Campbell 9-1-1 calls to police and fire, so 9-1-1 service is not interrupted.

Miles had no information on how many residents in the city were still without land lines Friday.

A spokeswoman for AT&T, which owns the cable, said she could not confirm how widespread the outage was, how many residents are still without service or how long the repairs will take.

An original report from a crew member at the site on Wilson Avenue said the damaged cable serviced 2,500 people.

Phone service was knocked out around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
