Neighbors | Sarah Foor .On Jan. 11, the students and teachers of Watson Elementary gathered in their all-purpose room to record a short segment for a Good Morning America project called "Your Three Words." The most important trio of words at Watson this year has been "fill a bucket," a phrase that reminds the students to evaluate their actions and focus on positivity to others. A group of third-graders responsible for the three signs glanced at them as their classmates streamed into the all-purpose room.

As guidance counselor at Lloyd and Watson elementaries, Penny Callahan has challenged her students to be “bucket fillers.”

Based on the book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today,” students are asked to be kind, courteous and helpful to their friends and classmates and fill each person’s “bucket” or self-image.

“The program began at Lloyd, where principal [Tom] Lenton always has the students self-evaluate their actions and observe if they have been ‘bucket fillers’ or ‘bucket dippers,’” said Callahan.

When the counselor introduced the bucket concept to Watson this year, the staff and students adopted it and truly made it their own.

One Watson classroom features a pocket chart where kids can leave nice messages for one another and show they are bucket fillers.

However, on Jan. 11, the staff and students at Watson made an effort to bring their goal to “fill a bucket” with people across America.

The entire school gathered in the all-purpose room to record a video they hope will be featured on “Good Morning America.”

“Robin Krempasky, a second-grade teacher, suggested we share our project with a GMA feature called “Your Three Words.” People are asked to share three words that mean something important to them, and here at Watson, the phrase ‘fill a bucket’ means a whole lot,” Callahan explained.

In their submission video, a group of students held up three signs with Watson’s new favorite phrase and then kids and teachers let out a whoop of joy.

The submission has been sent and fingers are crossed that the clip may air soon during a “Your Three Words” segment. Nonetheless, Callahan said getting on television isn’t the most important aspect of the project.

“It doesn’t matter if we never get on GMA. Everyone at Watson really took this program to heart and that is what I’ll always be the most proud of.”
