Pee Wee Phantoms take second at N.Y. tourney

The Youngstown Phantoms Pee Wee hockey team traveled to Jamestown, N.Y., last weekend to play in a tournament at

Jamestown Arena. After falling in its first two games, the locals rallied to win two straight contests and advance to the title game.

In the finals, the Phantoms lost to the NCCYHA Steelers for the third time in two days, falling 4-2. The loss clinched a second-place finish for Youngstown. Bo Gray and Devin Whitaker scored the two Phantom goals with Whitaker also getting an assist.

The tourney didn’t start out well for the Phantoms on Friday. The squad was overwhwlmed in the opener against the Steelers, suffering an 11-1 defeat. Scoring the lone goal for the Phantoms was Whitaker (Boardman), assisted by Gray (Boardman).

On Saturday morning, the Phantoms had to face the Steelers again and played much better. Gray and Whitaker each had a goal and an assist in the game, but Youngstown lost 6-2.

In the second game of the day, the locals faced Crawford County. Youngstown built a 4-1 lead midway through the final period and held off a late Crawford rally to win 4-3.

Whitaker had two goals and an assist, while Gray added a goal and an assist. Alex Laberto (Boardman) also scored a goal. Trey Imhoff had two assists, while Lexi Stutz (Boardman) and Dominic Joseph (Canfield) each had an assist.

On Saturday night, the Phantoms shut out the CC Flames 7-0. Colin Frost (Boardman) recorded the shutout at goalie. Imhoff had a hat trick with three goals and an assist. Whitaker had two goals and three assists. Nick Frantz and Stutz also recorded goals. Danny Beistel (Canfield) and Mike Fetsko (Boardman) got their first assists of the tournament.
