Artists sometimes draw inspiration from each other – maybe a technique or an idea or a lyric. But as part of Canfield High School’s Synergy of the Arts projects, inspiration struck through a game of telephone.

Fourteen groups of artists performed or showed their pieces Jan. 6 in the school’s auditorium after the months-long project. Synergy of the Arts runs throughout the fall and winter of the school year.

Starting in early fall, the first artist opens a fortune cookie that gives them an idea. They then must make a piece inspired by that quote. After a week, they show their piece to the next artist, who must use that piece as inspiration for their own creation. This goes on until the show in January.

“It gives artists with an odd medium a chance to be spotlighted, whether it’s cake making or digital art or dressmaking,” said senior Nathalie McClune, who has been in the program for three years. “It’s always really interesting.”

Synergy is also a fundraiser for Canfield’s drama club’s spring musical. This year, the artists raised nearly $700 for the club.

“This year, I really like the chain,” said drama club adviser Rebecca Heikkinin, “I thought it was interesting to follow the chain from person to person much more than in the other years.”
