Boardman wrestlers place at Top Gun

The Boardman wrestling team placed three competitors at last weekend’s Top Gun wrestling tournament in Alliance.

The Spartans’ John Dillon was runner-up at 126 pounds, while Nico Grazziani was third at 160 and Nick Mancini finished fifth at 106.

Dillon won four straight matches, including three by pin, before losing to Micah Jordan of St. Paris Graham, 7-4, in the finals. Jordan is the defending Division II state champion at 119 pounds.

Dillon won his opening match by pin in 27 seconds over Austin Morrison of Carrollton.

Graziani went 5-1 over the weekend, losing only to Graham’s Isaac Jordan (a two-time defending state champion) in the semifinals. He won his opening match over Zach Williams of Medina by technical fall, and defeated Josh Arrendale of Massillon Perry 3-2 in a tie-breaker.

Mancini went 4-2 over the weekend, winning three matches by pin, and decisioning Devon Brown of Steubenville 11-5 in the finals.

BGMS dominates YCS

Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated Youngstown Christian 48-21. BGMS had a very balanced attack on offense, with Devan Cool leading the way with nine points. Louie Cardona added eight, while Jamison Lytle and Preston Stitt chipped in with 6 apiece.

The squad held Youngstown Christian to seven points in the first half.

The seventh-grade boys’ defense shut down Youngstown Christian as they won 35-9. Leading the way for the Spartan offense was JR Ryan with nine points.

Bryce Richey also chipped in six points, while Mark Smaldino, Gavin Strines and Dante Colaluca each scored four points. Also scoring for the Spartans were Nick Stamp with three points, Nick Augustine with three points and Travis Koontz with two.

Golf event set for this summer

The annual Pink Ribbon Gold Classic will be held at Tippecanoe Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Pink Ribbon committee will also sponsor a bus trip this spring to a local casino. Watch for further details on both of these events.

Lady Spartans softball team hosts fundraiser

The Boardman Lady Spartans fastpitch softball team will host “Night at the Races” on Saturday at Operating Engineers Hall, 291 McClurg Road, Boardman. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and races begin at 7 p.m.

A $5 donation allows those over 21 to enjoy salad, pizza, wings and more. Soft drinks and draft beer will be included. A Super Bowl block pool, number boards, Chinese auction and a 50/50 drawing are planned. It will be a fun smoke-free environment.

Glenwood girls defeat AMS Red

The eighth-grade girls basketball team won an overtime thriller against AMS Red by a score of 29-27. The Spartans come out victorious after Krista Johnson scored on an offensive put-back with 30 seconds left. Bailey Brandt led the offense with 10 points, followed by Johnson’s eight points and eight steals.

Marissa Hanna dropped in five points, Natalie Wilson had four and Katie Platt added two.

The seventh-grade girls lost to AMS Red 19-17. Leading scorers for the girls were Aniyuh Spann with 13 points, Maryssa Wagner with two and Taylor Halowell with two.

Glenwood girls win sixth

Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade girls basketball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 34-12 victory over Youngstown Christian. Natalie Wilson led the offense with 13 points and added six rebounds.

Krista Johnson scored 10 points and added one rebound and seven steals. Bailey Brandy chipped in with seven points, Marissa Hanna had two and Ellie Hrtiz and two.

The seventh-grade girls lost 26-15 to Youngstown Christian. Leading scorers for the Spartans were Aniyuh Spann with six points, Taylor Halowell with four, Lauren Pavlansky with three and Alexis Stutz with two.

BGMS wrestlers participate in tournament

The BGMS wrestlers finished sixth out of 16 teams at the AMS Invitational. The Spartans won three and lost two matches. They lost to Southeast (66-24) and to Solon (43-42). They beat Salem (72-18), Hubbard (66-30) and Hickory (51-34). Winning matches for Glenwood were Brandon Wallace, Matt Maroni, Conner Kochansky, Chris Dailey, David Dutko, Cole Pollak, Nick Patoray, Sam Varga, AJ Pantaleo, Tyler Dempsey, Tyler Stolar, Zach Hodges, Jared Hoover, Brandon Alm, Anton Finch and Seth Golden. Alex Birchfield won all five of his matches, as did Danny Boerio.

BGMS stops AMS Red

The BGMS seventh-grade boys beat AMS Red 35-20. Leading the way for the Spartans was Gavin Strines, who had 10 points. JR Ryan finished the game with seven points. Also scoring for the Spartans were Sean Birchfield with six, Bryce Rich with four, Mark Smaldino with four, Nick Augustine with three and Dante Colaluca with one point. The Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade boys basketball team fell to AMS Red 46-25. Devan Cool led the Spartans offense, while Preston Stitt and Gavin Dill added six points.
