Talented high school bands from around the Valley offered hours of entertainment during Boardman High School’s fifth annual PTSA Pallooza on Jan. 14.

After five years of organizing the show, PTSA representative Joyce Reid said the event is down to a science. However, this year has offered a few welcome surprises.

“There have been some exciting developments. All ticket sales help the PTSA raise money for our scholarship program and each band gets tickets to sell for their set. As a thank-you for helping us raise money, the top five selling bands will play a show at the Cellar on Feb. 3. Alone, these up-and-coming bands might not be able to headline a show at that venue for a very long time,” Reid said.

Six-piece band “In Legions” was crowned the top ticket sellers at the event.

“I didn’t, let’s say, harass anyone to sell tickets,” joked singer Ryan Musgrove, a Boardman High School senior. “I sold to friends of course, but I did a lot of introducing myself to every person I met and telling them they’d love our show.”

The members of In Legions are juniors and seniors at Boardman, Austintown Fitch, Canfield, and Heartland Christian High School, which they admitted offers some unique opportunities.

“Our locations definitely help us branch out to sell tickets, but being from everywhere around Youngstown really influences our ethic as a band and our sound,” said guitarist Nick Castro.

The bands performing at the show are all local high school bands and the show included Big Ginge and the Nobodies, Engage, The Face Cards, Funks Monks, A Greater Distance, Hold No Grudge, In Legions, The Knickers, Northern Whale, Take It or Leave, and To the Winchester.

Earnings from the show will provide two $500 and two $250 scholarships for Boardman students provided by the PTSA. “We’re really proud of the work we do here and we’re proud that we can give so much to good kids,” Reid added.
