USPS to host community meeting on fate of North Side post office

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The U.S. Postal Service will host a community meeting that could determine the fate of Youngstown’s North Side post office.

The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at the United Methodist Community Center, 139 E. Boardman St.

The North Side branch was studied for possible closure. USPS is trying to cut costs as it faces annual billion-dollar deficits because of a government-mandated $5.5 billion annual pension pre-funding program.

If the decision is made to close the post office, residents will have the option of post-office-box delivery at the Youngstown Post Office or receive delivery at their residence.

A post-office spokesman said 20 people, including mail carriers, work at the North Side branch at 1716 Guadalupe Ave.

The postal service closed Youngstown’s South and East Side centers in 2011.

Cornersburg and the West Side location are the other remaining facilities.
